Moses: A&E Biography

Moses, the towering figure of the Old Testament, is in many ways contradictory and inscrutable. The greatest prophet of the Jewish people, he led the Israelites from slavery to nationhood and transmitted the Ten Commandments, which became the basis of monotheism and ethics for the Western world. But Moses also was a man humbled by a speech impediment, intimate with God yet distant from his own family, with a complicated, all-consuming relationship to the contentious people he led.

This thought- provoking A& E biography explores the life of Moses and his pivotal time, making ancient history come alive through the archeology, history, and geography of the region. Location shots place us in the epic Exodus story, and Bible scholars offer the insights to enhance the familiar text, delving into the psychology of a man who struggled with God and his people, yet never failed them.

1996, 100 mins.

While you watch, consider . . .

•How the film presents a finely tuned psychological portrait of Moses to complement what we know from the biblical text.

•The modern scholars’ “take” on some of the miracles that run through Exodus story.

•How, unlike tales of mythic heroes, the Moses story emphasizes the struggles and sacrifices of leadership and public life rather than the heroism of it.
