Starting a Film Group

PARTICIPANTS

The foundation of any discussion group is its membership. Group participants should be enthusiastic, inquisitive and able to express ideas clearly, concisely, and respectfully.

Group Size: Groups should ideally have 10-16 members, with an average turnout of 7-11 for each meeting. Since there are often dropouts and no-shows when a group starts, it is best to begin with a list of 15-20 names.

Recruitment: There are two basic approaches: open enrollment (anyone can sign up) and selective recruitment (people are invited to join). Whereas open enrollment might guarantee good initial interest in the group, selective recruitment can ensure a diverse mix of participants.

The organizer might begin recruitment with a few friends, who in turn ask their friends. It is also possible to piggyback onto an existing group–members of another club, participants in a course, or people working together on a committee.

If open enrollment is used for recruitment, there are many ways to effectively advertise. Notices can be placed in newsletters or other mailings and posted at appropriate central locations, while announcements are made at various meetings and in JHVC courses.
