THE HOLOCAUST:
DRAMATIC
AND DOCUMENTARY REALITIES
TEREZIN,
THE FORTRESS CAMP
These
first two films about the infamous prison camp are both based on
memory: one is a fictional reimagining by a former inmate, the other
a documentary about survivors. The third film powerfully weaves
Terezins facts into its fictional tale.
Transport
from Paradise (1963)
An original feature film set in Terezin (Theriesenstadt), the concentration
camp presented by the Nazis as a "model city." The film,
based on a novel by Arnost Lustig, who had been imprisoned there,
captures the surreal atmosphere of the camp during a 24-hour period.
Terezin
Diary (1990)
A documentary about survivors who, as children, had been inmates
at the camp from which Jewish prisoners were deported to Auschwitz.
The
Last Butterfly (1994)
In this drama, a famous French mime is brought to Terezin to perform
for a Red Cross inspection. When he learns about the reality of
the camp, he must decide what role to play in the Nazi charade.
