THE CATSKILLS
SELECTED FILMS
Marjorie
Morningstar
(1958)
Marjorie, the daughter of upwardly mobile Jewish parents in the
1930s, gets a job at a summer camp in the Catskills. She meets the
handsome director of a nearby resort's summer theater, and a romance
develops that makes her question her values, lifestyle, and ideas
about love and success.
Dirty
Dancing (1987)
This film takes place during the summer of 1963 at a resort, during
the heyday of the Jewish Catskills. Conflicts of class and ethnicity
are played out through the romantic relationship between a naive
Jewish teenager and a streetwise gentile dance instructor.
Sweet
Lorraine (1987)
The Hotel Lorraine is facing its last summer when the owner's granddaughter,
Molly Garber, surprisingly shows up for work. This touching film
captures the end of an era in Jewish-American life and explores
whether we can go home again.
