SUPPLEMENTARY
MATERIALS
Supplementary
materials provide a context for viewing and discussing the film. Articles,
reviews and essays can be chosen by the facilitator and distributed
in advance to the group.
Along
with watching the film in advance, the facilitator can do some basic
research before the meeting. Reading articles and reviews about
the selected film and its makers, learning about the movie's historical
context, looking at related books and tapesall make for a
more knowledgeable facilitator and better discussions.
Some
groups may decide to read books prior to the discussion. These might
include books
that served as the basis for the movie or are related to the film
or film series. Other videos
can be used as supplementary materials, and JHVC
courses can also provide useful background on selected topics
and films.
Each
group needs to decide which materials everyone will be expected
to read or view and which will be optional. Whatever the mix, the
discussion can only improve with these resources.
